The New York Knicks acquired Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a blockbuster trade ahead of the 2024-25 season. The Knicks traded Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to the Timberwolves as a part of the deal. However, some believe there is still room for a superstar signing to make the franchise championship favorites this season.
NBA experts and fans believed the four-time All-Star is the “missing piece” for the Knicks to become title contenders. Recently, CBS Sports reporter Kris Pursiainen claimed the Knicks have had “internal discussions” to sign another superstar to boost their championship-winning chances. The second-placed side in the Eastern Conference last season have been reportedly interested in adding Memphis Grizzlies star guard Marcus Smart to their roster.
According to Pursiainen, “The New York Knicks have had internal discussions about a potential deal for Marcus Smart per sources familiar with the situation.” He added, “NYK has had rumored interest in Smart before. No deal is imminent but several sources indicated the Knicks are willing to be active on the market.”
How Could Marcus Smart’s Signing Make The New York Knicks Championship Favorites?
With the signing of Karl-Anthony Towns, the Knicks added offensive support to their main man, Jalen Brunson. The franchise will also benefit from Towns’ skills in the absence of center Mitchell Robinson. However, the team could benefit exponentially with a hustler to dive for loose balls and take charges during the game.
Marcus Smart, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, has improved himself to be an all-around player in the NBA. Last season, the Grizzlies guard averaged 14.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.1 steals in just 20 games due to injuries. More blockbuster trades are possibly coming, with the NBA trade deadline on February 8, 2025.
