Philadelphia 76ers’ PG Cameron Payne’s offseason took a turn for the worse last month when he was arrested for allegedly providing false information to police officers. More details have now emerged regarding the arrest, which throws a curveball at Payne’s preparation for the upcoming season.
According to the incident record that TMZ Sports could get from the Scottsdale Police Department, Payne contacted law authorities on June 14 at about 2:44 AM. He fought with his girlfriend in Arizona, which led to the call.
The police said that Payne and his girlfriend told them they didn’t need police assistance when they arrived on the scene. They clarified that their argument was verbal and that they had become more composed. The Philadelphia 76ers guard, however, was reluctant when the police requested his name and birthdate to finish their investigation, as they said in their report.
Arrested Cameron Payne Refused to Give Officers His Name
The officers report Payne pretended to be “Terry Johnson” for a few minutes while hiding his true identity. Police threatened to arrest him if he continued to tell falsehoods. The cops said that Payne said, “That’s fine.”
“No, that’s my fake name, can you please leave,” Payne said while rapidly revoking his true identity, which he had given to the police earlier. Payne told police, “If you want to arrest me for giving you a fake name,” he told them, “congratulations.”

Officers eventually confirmed his true identity, took him into custody, and booked him on two charges: refusing a lawful order and obstructing a governmental operation. Shortly thereafter, he was released.
Since he was selected 14th overall in the 2015 draft, Cameron Payne has had difficulty staying in the league. He is scheduled to become a free agent this summer, so this timing is not ideal for him. Given the uncertainty surrounding his condition, it is unlikely that any teams would hurry to sign him.
