The NBA is set to make major changes to its draft night.
According to ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the league is looking to have its draft mirror that of the NFL as it’s finalizing plans to turn the event into a two-night affair.
Woj is reporting that the first and second rounds of the draft will take place on separate nights from 2024, though approval from the National Basketball Players Association is required.
The league has been in regular discussion with the union and, should the plan go through, the draft will be hosted on June 26-27 this year.
“The draft would split into first and second rounds on successive nights — June 26-27 — but the league must still get final approval from the National Basketball Players Association before the plan can be made official, sources said.”
There are a few reasons for this change. Of course, broadcasting partners are always at the forefront when it comes to such decisions, but the NBA is also hoping that the added time between rounds will help teams strategize and make better trades ahead of the second night.

It’s said that teams are frustrated by the frantic speed of the second round and would appreciate having more time to consider various factors.
