A former NBA forward is staring at the possibility of a 20-year prison term in the wake of a conviction.
Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who notably won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, was found guilty this Wednesday for his part in a scheme set up to defraud the league’s healthcare system.
Former Detroit Pistons guard William Bynum has also been convicted, with the pair among over 20 people set to face consequences after submitting false dental and medical claims to the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan.
“Today’s conviction exemplifies that despite notoriety or success in sports or any other field, no one is exempt from criminal charges if they engage in fraud,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, per ESPN.
According to prosecutors, doctors and dentists who were in on the scheme created fake invoices which were in turn handed to the supplemental insurance plan.
Terrence Williams, a former first-round pick for the New Jersey Nets, is already serving a 10-year sentence following his conviction in July. Williams was named as the ringleader.
