The popular “Bang!” call by ESPN NBA play-by-play voice Mike Breen has made him a well-respected legend in the sports commentary world. Now, Breen can apply the phrase, “Bang on the money” to himself.
According to a report from Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, the Worldwide Leader in Sports has awarded Breen with a two-year contract extension. The legendary play-by-play man is now sunder contract with ESPN for four years:
“Breen, 62, has agreed to a two-year, multi-million-dollar extension with ESPN to go along with the final two seasons that he has left on his current deal with the network, according to sources.”
It’s a positive piece of news for the many fans of Breen. Throughout 2023, the network has conducted a long list of employee layoffs, with Disney CEO Bob Iger citing the company’s wish to save several billions of dollars.
Some of the more notable talents let go included Breen’s former coworkers Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy, longtime reporter Suzy Kolber, former star athletes Jalen Rose, Steve Young, Matt Hasselbeck, Keyshawn Johnson and former “First Take” co-host Max Kellerman.
Breen has called the NBA Finals every year since 2006, following Al Michaels’ move to NBC Sports where he would call “Sunday Night Football” for 16 years. Breen is also the play-by-play voice for the New York Knicks on MSG Network. He has also served as a commentator for five different Olympics games.

Longtime ESPN commentator Doris Burke and former NBA head coach Doc Rivers replaced Van Gundy and Jackson on the network’s No. 1 commentary team alongside Breen.
