Michael Jordan turns 60 this week — on Friday, February 17, to be exact. And while he’ll probably be getting a bunch of cool gifts, none of them can compare to the gift that he’ll be giving as part of his birthday celebration.
According to a report from ESPN, the six-time NBA champion will be making a $10,000,000 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, setting a new record for largest donation ever received by the 43-year-old organization.
Jordan released the following statement about his donation, via ESPN:
“For the past 34 years, it’s been an honor to partner with Make-A-Wish and help bring a smile and happiness to so many kids,” Jordan said in a news release. “Witnessing their strength and resilience during such a tough time in their lives has truly been an inspiration.”
Jordan first got involved with Make-A-Wish back in 1989, and he’s been one of the most requested celebrities when it comes to granting these wishes. He was even named a Make-A-Wish ambassador in 2008 for the impact he has had on the children and families he’s supported through the organization.
As for his recent donation, it’s quite the generous gift from MJ. Thankfully, he won’t be going broke as a result of it, as Jordan’s net worth currently stands at a whopping $1.7-billion.
Michael Jordan spent 15 years in the NBA, during which he established himself as the greatest basketball player of all time. However, it’s his endorsements (especially during his post-basketball career) that have helped him earn the majority of his income. His many successful business endeavors have allowed him to become the richest athlete in the world. And it’s really not even close.
