The Charlotte Hornets are set to be sold, with Michael Jordan’s tenure as owner nearing its end. The former Chicago Bulls superstar has been the franchise’s majority shareholder since 2010 but is finalizing a $3 billion deal to hand it over to minority owners Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall.
The agreement probably couldn’t have come at a worse time for Hornets fans as the NBA Draft is set for this Thursday. As it happens, MJ will still be the team owner on Thursday and, with the Hornets to pick at No. 2, he will have the final say in who they select.
As great as he was on the court, Jordan isn’t an expert at spotting talent and has made some questionable draft decisions over the span of his ownership. He did hit with LaMelo Ball in 2020, but anyone could have done that.
Though MJ is set to walk away from the team to the tune of a huge payday, he will still be able to make a decision that could shape the future of the franchise for the next several years.
And fans think it’s ridiculous.

Who knows, though? Maybe Michael Jordan’s final act as the owner of the Charlotte Hornets is the one that sets them up for a really bright future. He would absolutely love to get one over Charles Barkley and all of the folks who have criticized his ownership over the years while also dipping with $3 billion in the bank.
