Ja Morant just might be on the road to redemption after all of the negative press. The Memphis Grizzlies point guard has since attended counseling and was the subject of an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Jalen Rose in which he said all the right things.
But the Grizzlies aren’t taking any chances and are planning to keep him out of strip clubs when they hit the road for away games. According to a report from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon and Sam Amick, the Grizzlies will no longer overnight in other cities after games and will hop on a plane right after playing on the road, especially when they’re in spots like Miami.
The report reads:
“There have even been travel measures taken to curtail nightlife habits this season, with the Grizzlies leaving more road cities (especially the glitzier ones, like Miami) immediately after the game instead of staying overnight. Additional accountability measures may follow.”
Morant has been the subject of many concerning reports over the span of the last few months, but perhaps none as worrying as him getting on Instagram Live and flashing a handgun while at a Colorado strip club after a game against the Denver Nuggets earlier this month.
The guard has escaped serious punishment as the NBA could not conclude that the weapon belonged to him or that he had traveled with it on the team plane. The league has suspended Ja for eight games, which includes time served, so he is eligible to play on Monday, though the Grizzlies don’t plan to have him suit up as he might not be ready to play after missing six consecutive games.
“We (will) sit down and talk to him and guide him through this process,” head coach Taylor Jenkins was quoted as saying. “That’s going to be our focal point, on and off the court. As I said in the beginning, support and accountability — that’s what we are focused on. Not just in these recent couple of weeks, but moving forward.
