Mark Cuban is a legendary owner who wants to build the Dallas Mavericks into a contender at any cost, however, there is one thing he can’t stand.
In an interview on the Patrick Beverley podcast, Cuban admitted that he’s had players traded because they smoked too much weed. His rationale being that its important to establish a culture for a team and to know what is acceptable and what isn’t.
An interesting note to point out for Cuban’s comments is that it isn’t the act of smoking weed that made him trade players, but the amount and potency. He wants to set a culture of accountability and wants players to fall in that line.
During Cuban’s ownership of the Mavericks, they’ve seen an abundance of success, including two trips to the NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 2011 against the favored Miami Heat. Cuban understands the ins and outs of building a team, as well as keeping a strong culture of rules and boundaries.
Whether who was or wasn’t traded isn’t necessarily a factor, but the big takeaway is just how important the little things can be to a team. Cuban created a structured environment.
