Mark Cuban shocked the sports world when he sold the Dallas Mavericks for $3.5 billion last year. Cuban, who bought the team from Ross Perot Jr. for $285 million in 2000, has always been a hands-on owner. Throughout his tenure, the Mavs secured one NBA title in 2011.
However, during his recent appearance on the “BIG Podcast” with Shaquille O’Neal, Cuban explained why he decided to part ways with the franchise. The former Mavs owner, who recently praised Luka Doncic, revealed two key reasons behind the move.
“I sold the team for two reasons: one, my kids 15, 18, and 21. It puts a lot of pressure on them as I get older to make a decision, are they gonna run the team? It’s worked out for some families and other kids just hate it, leave it resentful. I don’t want to put my kids in that position,” Cuban said.
“And second, I always had an edge when I came in. But what’s happening now, and you saw it with Golden State, now with Boston, is you build all around the arena, and the arena becomes a central point for some bigger real estate development. I don’t know sh*t about that. And for me to put up $1 billion and bring in a partner to run that sh*t for me, that’s a big risk,” he added.
A.J. Lawson Returns to the Dallas Mavericks on A Two-Way Deal After Waiver
The Dallas Mavericks made a roster move on Tuesday, waiving A.J. Lawson from his non-guaranteed contract. While some fans speculated that this could mean a big-name addition to the team, the Mavericks had other plans, bringing Lawson back as a two-way player.
Lawson originally signed a four-year, non-guaranteed deal this offseason but now returns to the team in a slightly different role. Last season, he appeared in 42 games for the Mavericks, averaging 3.2 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game.

In addition to Lawson, the Mavericks currently have Kessler Edwards and Brandon Williams signed to two-way contracts. The Mavericks also keep an eye on Jazian Gortman, who impressed during preseason games.
