Following the Boston Celtics’ championship victory in 2024, star forward Jayson Tatum signed a record-breaking five-year, $313 million contract extension with the franchise. Recently, Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban opened up on whether the NBA contracts will reach the $1 billion mark in future.
Last season, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s Dallas Mavericks reached their first NBA Finals after 13 years in franchise history. Ahead of the 2024-25 season, the Mavs acquired four-time champion Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors, improving their title-winning chances.
Recently, Mark Cuban appeared on the Club Shay Shay podcast and discussed the range of future contracts in the NBA. Luka Doncic has a $49 million player option in the 2026-27 season, prompting NFL legend Shannon Sharpe to ask about the scope of his new contract. Sharpe asked about the possibility of future NBA players with a $1 billion contract.
Cuban said, “Yeah, for sure, but that presumes TV keeps going up the way it is… but you’re gonna see $100 million a year here shortly… Because if a TV contract has 10% increases in the cap, the way the CBA works. And you saw Steph had $62 million for one year. Luka will get a lot and it’s gonna go crazier.”
He added, “This year is still the old CBA, but once that new money kicks in, they’ll be making more money per year than I will. I’m not making $100 million every year. You’re gonna have players making more than the owners. That’s okay. There is no league without them. They are the league, and they earned every penny of it.”
