After Jalen Brunson left the Dallas Mavericks for the New York Knicks in 2022, the 2011 NBA champions strengthened their squad by signing All-Star guard Kyrie Irving in 2023. Ahead of the 2024-25 season, the 2024 NBA finalists signed Klay Thompson, and the Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban believes that the former Warriors guard will have an easier life playing alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Recently, Mark Cuban appeared on Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart‘s The Roommates Show podcast. While Cuban and Brunson ended their differences after the Mavericks’ failed free agency negotiations in 2022, they discussed the upcoming season. The 66-year-old businessman apologized to Brunson for blaming his father, Rick, for the 2022 failed negotiation.
In addition, Cuban claimed on the podcast that the Mavs’ new signing, Klay Thompson, will have an easier time in Dallas. The businessman talked about the Warriors coach, Steve Kerr’s trademark motion offense, where players must keep moving. With Klay entering his 14th season, the guard has slowed down due to injuries.
While discussing the 2024-25 season, Cuban told Brunson, “The big addition was Klay. Just someone who you have to face-guard, who’s going to make 40 percent (on 3PA), and we’re hoping, at Golden State, he had to always be on the move. They had that motion offense where he was always coming off screens and running.
“We don’t do that…but just standing in the corner…just catch and shoot from Luka and Ky. Hopefully, his life is going to be a lot easier.”
Klay Thompson Claims To Be “Missing Piece” For Kyrie And Luka
After Thompson’s trade to the Mavericks, he was asked about his plans to fit in the team with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic. The four-time NBA champion, looking to get his fifth ring, said, “Me playing with Luka and Kyrie… That’s what was attractive was seeing how, especially watching that championship this year, I was really shocked to see the chemistry with the teammates.

“And at this point in my career, I might not be able to run as fast as I once could or jump as high, but I can still knock down open shots… I think I can be that missing piece for them. The D (defense) can’t guard Kyrie and Luka. They can’t send as many double-teams.”
The excitement is at its peak with the Dallas Mavericks starring Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic, Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, and Dereck Lively II. The 2024 NBA runners-up will open their 2024-25 season against Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul’s San Antonio Spurs on October 24 at the American Airlines Center.
