In the latest NBA MVP contenders ranking, Luka Doncic finds himself at number 5 even after his triple-double riots on a weekly basis. Now it seems the Slovenian has taken that personally and decided to do one better with yet another triple-double.
The playoff race is heating up with each passing day as the finish line approaches rapidly. The Mavs are in a fight with Western Conference rivals the Lakers and the Warriors and one slip can prove costly at this stage. With the added incentive of the waning MVP shouts, Luka Doncic has decided to take matters into his own hands.
Luka Doncic continues his dominant triple-double streak
On Monday, the Bulls faced the Mavs in a cross-conference match, which should’ve been an even contest given the two team’s standings on their respective tables. Luka Doncic made sure that was far from the case as the Mavs ran through the Bulls in emphatic fashion.
In the 92-127 blowout win, Luka Doncic registered his seventh consecutive triple-double. The 25-year-old dropped 27 points, 14 assists and 12 rebounds for the Mavs, continuing his impressive form. Besides his NBA-record streak of 30-point triple-doubles, Luka Doncic’s two other significant streaks were broken.
Luka Doncic’s record was on a 6-game streak of scoring 30+ points triple-double starting in the Raptors game last month. The other streak was his 5-game streak of 35+ points triple-double that started in the game against the Celtics when the Mavs lost 138-110 despite Doncic’s 37 points.

The Mavericks came right out of the gates in the first quarter and posted a 44-16 lead. Former Bulls player Daniel Gafford pilled on the misery on the Chicago-based franchise with his 20-point blitz that included nine field goals with 100% accuracy. This puts him only seven short of the consecutive field-goal record of NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, who has 35 consecutive to his name.
Doncic secures Western Conference player of the week
Luka Doncic added to his highly decorated accolades even before the hammering of the Bulls started. He picked up the Western Conference Player of the Week award for the 12th time in his six-year career in the league.
The award was handed out for the games played between March 4 and March 10 and the Mavs played three games during this window. Doncic led the Mavs to a 2-1 record in this span.
Doncic weaved his magic during the week that kicked off on March 5 against the Indiana Pacers, which ended in a defeat. The former Real Madrid star dropped 39 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in that game. He carried that form to the next game vs the Heat on March 7 in a 114-108 victory. Doncic scored 35 points in that game while handing out 11 rebounds and assists each.
On March 9, Luka Doncic put on another clinic at the Pistons’ expense, where he bagged 39 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. This POTW award puts him only 4 short of Dirk Nowitzki’s franchise record of 16 awards.
With Luka Doncic’s reign of terror showing no signs of slowing down, the League and his All-Star buddy Nikola Jokic should take precautions to avert the imminent blows that the Slovenian is ready to dish out.
