Following a disappointing play-off defeat to the Nuggets, the Lakers parted ways with Darvin Ham. After more than a month, the Lakers are undecided as to who will fill the vacant seat. Former Magic star, Gilbert Arenas has now fired at the Lakers over the drawn-out process of hiring.
Recently on the “Gil’s Arena” podcast, the issue of the Lakers’ hiring process came up, and Agent Zero did not hesitate to blast the LA franchise over their lethargic ways. “Lakers motto is business and entertainment first. As long as they can keep the name in the algorithm, the Lakers are going to do it,” said Arenas about the HC selection process.
His co-host, Rashad McCants also agreed to it and said, “It feels like they decided to prolong it. Now you throw out a couple candidates until the end of the finals and they make their announcement at the end that it’s JJ. They just going to throw in a couple more motherf**kers that might seem a little bit more qualified or perfect for the job and then they’ll end up picking JJ.”
The Lakers have interviewed multiple candidates over the past few weeks, including JJ Redick, James Borrego, and Sam Castle, and now Dan Hurley’s name has been thrown into the mix. The UConn HC is reportedly even getting an offer from the Lakers that might surprise many people.
Rumors Say the Lakers Wanted Redick to Appease LeBron James
Despite JJ Redick being tipped as the favorite to land the vacant HC role at the Lakers, the confirmation is yet to come. While all that goes on, Dan Hurley’s inclusion into the race this past week gave the whole scenario another dynamic.
Around the NBA rumor corners, the word is that LeBron James is lobbying for JJ Redick to be the next HC of the Lakers. Given their past and current joint endeavor in the “Mind The Game” Podcast, it is only natural that LeBron will want his running mate to be a part of the franchise who has shown his ball knowledge in the show multiple times with a whole demonstration on whiteboard.

But the Lakers forward’s agent, Rich Paul has already cleared the air surrounding it by saying, “LeBron James and JJ Redick, they do a podcast together. That does not mean that (James) wants Redick as his head coach.”
On the other hand, Dan Hurley is one of the biggest names on the college basketball scene after back-to-back NCAA championship wins with UConn. The college team undoubtedly will not be able to match the Lakers’ offer, making Hurley one of the highest-paid HCs in the league.
As of now, there’s no confirmation about who will ultimately take the vacant seat, but as things progress, it might take a good chunk of the summer before the dust settles.
