The Los Angeles Lakers will head into the 2024-25 season with an almost identical roster from last season. The major changes in the Lakers’ roster are LeBron James’ son, Bronny James, and JJ Redick’s appointment as the new head coach. Ahead of the upcoming season, Lakers legend Magic Johnson pointed out the challenges Redick will face in his first season to prove himself as the franchise’s head coach.
The Lakers picked Bronny James in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. With his signing, LeBron James and his son will become the first father-son duo in the NBA to play together on the same team. On the other hand, following their first-round loss in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Purple and Gold waived Darwin Ham and replaced him with Redick in July.
Five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson appeared as a Thursday’s guest on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. While talking about the new Lakers head coach, Johnson believed Redick would face challenges in his first season.
The three-time NBA MVP stated, “It’s hard to go from where he was to the coach. Remember, he was criticizing guys; now he’s got to come and coach these guys that are in the NBA and in that locker room. He’s a very intelligent man, I’ll give him that. He’s smart, he knows the game frontwards and backwards, also, analytics-wise, he’s really intelligent too.”
Johnson claimed that making adjustments in the game differs from analyzing the game. He added, “Can that transfer to the court? Can he get the guys to play the way he wants them to play? Have a great system on both ends, offense and defense, and can he make adjustments within the game? That’s going to be the key for me. Then I’ll know if he’s a great coach.”
