The Los Angeles Lakers have begun the preseason without significantly adding to the team.
In the 2024 NBA Draft, the Lakers selected LeBron James’s son, Bronny, in the second round with the 55th pick. However, Bronny’s addition did not significantly improve the team.
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade idea to help the Lakers add some key players. Pincus suggested a trade in which the Lakers would acquire Washington Wizards guard Malcolm Brogdon and Chicago Bulls guard Jevon Carter.
“Brogdon is a career 39.1 percent three-point shooter with more defensive skill than Russell. He’s struggled to stay on the court consistently over his career, but that’s why the Lakers would be able to get him for what they’re giving up,” Pincus wrote.
“Since the Lakers would have a hard cap at the second apron ($188.9 million) by aggregating contracts, several others, including Vincent, Reddish, Wood, and Hood-Schifino, would need to go. L.A. must also add an additional player via free agency to a pro-rated minimum contract earning no more than about $900,00 to get to the required 14,” Pincus added.
Pincus proposed a three-team trade involving the Lakers, Wizards, and Bulls. This deal would involve sending Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell to the Washington Wizards.

D’Angelo Russell Struggles to Backup the Lakers After His Return to the Team
The Lakers re-signed their former player, Russell, to the team in February 2023. The 28-year-old star’s stellar skills helped the team reach the Western Conference Finals in the 2022-23 NBA season. However, his shooting skills were not pleasing in the postseason. During the 2023-24 NBA season, Russell played in 76 games and averaged 18.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds.
Russell’s future in the franchise is uncertain, as Pincus reported that “the Lakers have hoped to upgrade defensively at the position.” The trade option will remain open until February 6, 2025, when the deadline is reached. The Lakers will still have a chance to acquire key players from the league.
