The Lakers have formally interviewed JJ Redick to replace Darvin Ham, according to reports from Shams Charania and Jovan Buha for The Athletic. Redick is a “Pat Riley-like coaching prospect who could both help the franchise in the short term and lead it for years,” according to the report, which also stated that the Lakers “are infatuated with Redick’s potential.”
In a Colin Cowherd episode of The Herd, Nichols stated that considering his inexperience, JJ Redick might not be ready to take on a demanding position and manage two superstars with championship hopes.
According to Rachel Nichols, it is unfair to compare Riley who had a lengthy career as an assistant coach before taking the helm as head coach with JJ Redick, who has no prior NBA coaching experience.
“That’s the biggest knock on JJ Redick. I think everyone knows how good he’s going to be. It’s just, can you walk into being a head coach of a team with two superstars that need to win now if you have no experience? That was not Pat Riley,”
Riley was an LA Lakers television broadcaster before he was a head coach. After ending his playing career, he took on this duty in 1977 and remained in it until 1979. Riley advanced to the next level of coaching career in 1979, joining Paul Westhead as an assistant coach with the Lakers.
JJ Redick Is Currently the Leading Candidate for Lakers Head Coach Position
Because of his length of tenure with the team, Shams Charania suggested on The Pat McAfee Show that JJ Redick may be the front-runner for the Lakers head coaching job. According to Charania, Redick was the first candidate to meet with the Lakers in person, and he mentioned that the organization had visited him in Chicago during the Draft Combine.

Charania said, “Going into this process and right now, my sense is that JJ Redick, he is the guy around the league that everyone believes is the frontrunner for this job.”
Despite having no head coaching experience in the NBA, JJ Redick has been a pundit and hosts the “Mind the Game” podcast, where he shares his basketball expertise with LeBron James of Los Angeles.
