After the Clippers’ exit from the playoffs in the first round against the Mavericks, things looked uncertain for Ty Lue. With the vacant Lakers HC job, there were mumblings about Lue switching to the other part of the town to reunite with former apprentice, LeBron James. But now the rumors are finally put to bed with the Clippers announcing an extension with Ty Lue. But how much will he earn? Let’s crunch some numbers.
According to reports, the extension will earn Ty Lue $70 million over the next 5 seasons. In his final year of contract, which ended after the playoff elimination, he earned $32 million with it.
Since Lue took charge as the head coach, the Clippers have had three playoff finishes, including a conference finals appearance in the 2020-21 season. After two consecutive first-round exits, the franchise is keeping faith in the 47-year-old. With him confirmed long-term, the Clippers can turn their attention towards arranging the pieces on board with the players.
Despite the bumper pact for Lue, he is still not the highest-paid coach in the league.
Which Head Coaches Earn More Than Ty Lue in NBA?
After the new contract, Ty Lue’s per-year salary stands at $14 million a year. But that can only make him the fourth-highest-earning HC in the NBA.
Above Lue is Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat who earns $15 million per year from his $120 million, 8-year contract signed this season. Gregg Popovich is next with his $80 million, 5-year deal, which gives him $16 million annually.

But standing atop the earning tree is the GSW’s Steve Kerr with his $17.5 million per year deal. While all the highest-earning HC failed to bring success this season, the new contract for Lue could be the start of something fresh, just as the Clippers expect of their man in charge.
