Movie theaters had seriously hoped a return to normalcy was on the horizon after people went out and got vaccinated. Those dreams may be deferred, at least for a few more months.
Space Jam: A New Legacy came out guns blazing when he premiered, but it turned out to be a ne-weekend wonder. The $31 million opening posted by the LeBron James/Bugs Bunny sequel last weekend was great, but the buzz surrounding the movie died fairly quickly.
After an unexpected jump to the top spot last week, the animated movie has fallen down to the fourth spot in its second week. It overtook Marvel’s Black Widow in its first week, and made a whopping $31.7 M, but could not replicate its success in Week 2.
According to Forbes, there was a 69% drop from one weekend to the next.
“With $9.5 million in weekend two, Space Jam: A New Legacy has earned $50 million domestic (after a $12.6 million overseas weekend, a decent -37% drop) and $94 million worldwide.
With nine overseas markets scheduled for the next two months, including Japan (August 27) and Italy (September 23), this one could eke out a $150 million global cume, which would at least somewhat save face amid the current ever-changing (worsening?) circumstances. But it would appear that the folks who wanted to see Space Jam: A New Legacy in theaters did so last weekend, with the rest either not bothering or watching it on HBO Max.”
A steep 69% decline saw Space Jam making just $9.56M in its second week puts the movie at $51.37 M in domestic markets and $42.6M internationally.

Space Jam 2 was not very well received by adults, who either blasted it because of their love for the 1996 Space Jam or that they already disliked LeBron to begin with. A lot of people complained about LeBron James and his acting, while others complained about the subpar storyline.
At its current pace, it’s hard to say whether the movie would be able to break even and match its budget of $150M.
