Legendary basketball star LeBron James is set to etch his name into Olympic history. The 39-year-old has been chosen as the flag bearer for Team USA’s men’s team at the upcoming Paris Olympics, making him the first male basketball player to do so. The governing body is likely to announce its female flag bearer on Tuesday.
Previously, only female basketball players, Dawn Staley in 2004 and Sue Bird in 2021, have carried the U.S. flag at the Olympics for basketball.
“I Hold That With My Utmost Honor,” LeBron James Said
James, a four-time NBA champion and widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, will be making his fourth Olympic appearance for Team USA. The Lakers’ legend, who made his Olympics debut in Athens in 2004, has two gold medals to his name.
James, who sits third on the high-scorers list with 273 points, will have a chance to surpass Carmelo Anthony on the list.
“I hold that with the utmost honor,” James said upon receiving the news. “It is something that my family, my community, my friends will live on forever,” he added.
Team USA will begin their Olympic campaign on July 28 against Serbia. They will then play against South Sudan on July 31 before concluding the group stages with a match against Puerto Rico on August 3.
