LeBron James is now the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, and the Los Angeles Lakers jersey he wore when he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Tuesday night is expected to fetch over $3 million if it ever gets put up for sale.
That is according to TMZ Sports, with the publication citing an auction expert.
LeBron broke the long-standing record in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, scoring 38 points, two more than were needed to pass Kareem’s 38,387. The game came to a halt when he scored points 35 and 36 with a jumper that’s likely to go down as one of the most memorable baskets in NBA history.
Heritage Auctions director of sports auctions Chris Ivy told TMZ the jersey King James wore on the night could “easily fetch seven figures on the block,” considering the fact that his 2013 Game 7 NBA finals jersey sold for $3.7 million in a recent Sotheby’s auction.
“I believe this jersey is just as historic and desirable, if not more so,” Ivy was quoted as saying. “So I would estimate it at more than $3 million.”
James is unlikely to ever put the jersey up for sale, though. It must mean a whole lot to him and, given his financial savvy, he’s probably never going to get to the point where he needs to sell such an important jersey.
