The Los Angeles Lakers have chosen the most fitting date to honor one of their greatest-ever players.
There’s no doubt the team would have erected a Kobe Bryant statue outside of their arena at some point. It was just a matter of when.
Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna in early 2020, is set to be honored with the unveiling of a statue near the team’s Crypto.com arena next February. Gigi is also going to be honored, with the team announcing as much this Thursday in a video featuring Kobe’s widow, Vanessa.
“On behalf of the Lakers, my daughters and me, I am so honored that right in the center of Los Angeles in front of the place known as ‘The house that Kobe built,’ we are going to unveil a statue so that his legacy can be celebrated forever,” Vanessa said.
The statue will be unveiled on February 8, 2024. The date, 2/8/24, is significant in that Gigi wore the No. 2 on her basketball team while Kobe played with both No. 8 and No. 24 for the Lakers.
