After losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Los Angeles Lakers lost their second 2024 NBA preseason game on Sunday night against the Phoenix Suns. However, the fans and the Lakers roster remain upbeat as the father and son duo of LeBron James and Bronny James played their first game together in the Purple and Gold threads. Lakers head coach JJ Redick explained the strategy behind playing LeBron and Bronny together.
The Lakers star forward and the young shooting guard played over four minutes together in the second quarter during the 118-114 loss against the Suns. Coincidentally, the historic moment for the James family arrived on Bronny’s 20th birthday.
While discussing the strategy, Redick said in a post-game interview, “I thought the stretch was okay in terms of our team. That was during a stretch where we had some issues without transition defense just getting matched, but I liked what I saw throughout the first half from all the groups we tried.”
He added, “In terms of the why? I just wanna give them the chance to play together in the preseason and get them in the flow of the game. How we did our substitution patterns in Game 1, that’s the right time to do it.” Besides the Lakers head coach, LeBron and Bronny reflected on their historic moment.

While Bronny James had a hilarious segment with the reporter in the post-game interview, LeBron sounded like a proud father. The Lakers rookie cracked a ‘dad’ joke, leaving the journalists in splits. On the other hand, the four-time NBA champion claimed he would never forget the “pretty cool” moment.
Regarding the game, LeBron James was the most prolific player on the court on Sunday night. He scored 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists in 16 minutes. Meanwhile, Bronny James failed to score a point and grabbed two rebounds in his 13 minutes of appearance.
