When the Dallas Mavericks attempted to trade for Kyle Kuzma at the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline, he declined because he believed the Mavericks were not “true contenders.” Now, the Mavericks have advanced to the NBA finals against the Boston Celtics, and it seems that Kuzma’s prediction about the team was inaccurate. He could have been playing alongside Dallas’ star player Luka Doncic and guard Kyrie Irving in the Finals.
In February, Kuzma had an interview with the Athletics and mentioned that the Mavericks were interested in him. They presented a trade offer and left the decision to him. However, Kuzma rejected the offer.
“There was a point in time, Dallas, when they definitely wanted me. [Michael] Winger presented me with the trade, but he obviously didn’t want to trade me. He kind of left the decision up to me a little bit and asked me what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to stay and continue to build something. And that was kind of the end of it.” Kuzma said.
Kuzma discussed his mindset for playing in the NBA
Kuzma stated that he had won a championship in his career and understood the purpose of playing basketball. He mentioned that he plays to win the championship, not just to enter the playoffs. He also stated that there are only a few true contenders for the championship, and Dallas is not one of them.
“In my career, I won a championship. So, I understand that when we play this game of basketball, it’s not about contending for a playoff spot. It’s about contending for an NBA championship. There are only three or four contenders — true contenders. I just felt like our timelines didn’t line up.” Kuzma added.
Recently, trade rumors involving Kyle Kuzma have heated up, with rumors suggesting that the Oklahoma City Thunder are interested in acquiring him. NBA journalist Jake Weinbach claims that OKC is preparing to trade for Kuzma this offseason in exchange for Josh Giddey and draft picks.
