It looks like the marriage between Kristaps Porzingis and the Dallas Mavericks may already be over less than two years after he agreed to a five-year deal worth $158 million to stay with the Mavs.
The Mavs acquired him from the Knicks and he figured to be part of something larger alongside Luka Dončić.
Things changed quickly as the Mavs have taken a step back as the current ninth seed in the Western Conference, ranking 27th in overall defense. A report came out this week that Dallas has quietly gauged the trade market for Porzingis, according to league sources.
“They’ve kicked the tires on everybody on their roster that’s not named Luka,” one person with knowledge of Dallas’ thinking said. “You know [president of basketball operations] Donnie [Nelson]; they’re always tinkering.”
“They’ve definitely sniffed around on him,” an assistant general manager told B/R. “They’re taking the temperature, because they know at some point it’s gonna come around.”
Social media users soon noticed that Porzingis unfollowed the team on Instagram.
