The Dallas Mavericks have established a strong reputation for their commitment to player development, particularly when it comes to nurturing rookie talent. This dedication was once again evident last year when the team brought on Tyson Chandler as a player development coach. Chandler has had a significant impact on the Mavericks’ young players, especially Dereck Lively II.
Lively II has quickly become one of Chandler’s biggest admirers. In a recent press conference, Lively spoke candidly about the immense influence Chandler has had on his confidence and mental toughness.
“Being able to be mentally tough. I look at him and I see myself plus 20, 25 years…(Chandler) being able to guide me, it makes me that much more confident in who I am. Knowing that he has my back, he’s confident in me,” Lively said.
Under Chandler’s mentorship, Lively’s ability to internalize and implement the lessons has translated into impressive on-court performance. The 22-year-old averaged 8.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. With leading the Mavs to Conference Finals, he earned him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
Tyson Chandler Lauds Dereck Lively II’s Work Ethics and Talent
Dereck Lively II’s admiration for his mentor, Tyson Chandler, is matched by Chandler’s appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the Mavericks’ rookie. Recently, Chandler shared his thoughts on Lively during an appearance on the All the Smoke Podcast.
“He’s active, very athletic young kid, reminds me of myself a lot,” Chandler said.

Chandler then recounted a conversation with Mavericks’ head coach, Jason Kidd, regarding the rookie star.
“The funny thing, Jason, when I came to the gym the day after he got the pre-draft workout, and J-Kidd was like, ‘Man, I wish you’d have come yesterday.’ He was like, ‘There’s a kid that we’re thinking about taking that reminds me a lot of like you.’ He’s like, ‘And not cuz he’s light skin, but he got the same attributes.'”
Chandler’s early observations have proven accurate, as the 20-year-old rookie has already exceeded the Mavericks’ expectations. Lively’s performance during the regular season was noteworthy, but he truly shined in the playoffs. In 16 playoff games, he averaged 8.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.
