An intriguing blockbuster trade proposal has the New York Knicks landing a future Hall of Famer and four-time NBA Champion.
Golden State Warriors’ superstar Klay Thompson has one year remaining on the five-year, $190 million extension he signed in the 2019 offseason. If the Dubs don’t re-sign him by the start of next summer, Thompson could enter free agency for the first time in his career.
At NBA Analysis Network, James Piercey proposed a blockbuster deal that would see the Knicks land Thompson from the Warriors in exchange for 2011 league MVP Derrick Rose and center Mitchell Robinson:
“Some Warriors fans will protest here. This is the last year of Thompson’s contract.
Sure. What about his next contract? Thompson has declined to an extent. He’s far less consistent than he used to be. He’s still going to command more than either Rose or Robinson currently make.
Besides, Rose is on an expiring deal as well. When factoring in Thompson’s next deal, this trade has the Warriors saving a considerable amount of money long-term.
It also has them netting Mitchell Robinson. He may not even be available if he didn’t seem to be petitioning for a trade. The Warriors should be happy to add him – he’s developed into one of the best defensive big men in the league. “
There aren’t any firm indications that the Warriors are looking to trade Thompson. The five-time All-Star is still an integral part of a Warriors’ core consisting of fellow future Hall of Famers Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Thompson missed the entire 2019-20 season recovering from an ACL tear he suffered in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, a loss to the Toronto Raptors. Thompson unfortunately missed all of 2020-21 as well after suffering a torn Achilles tendon.
But Thompson returned with a force last year, helping the Warriors win their fourth championship in eight seasons by outlasting the Boston Celtics in eight games.

Should Thompson be shopped by the Warriors down the road, the Knicks definitely make sense as a potential landing spot. Tom Thibodeau has rebuilt the Knicks into a winning club, and there’s no shortage of talent there led by Julius Randle, R.J. Barrett and Jalen Brunson.
