The Dallas Mavericks made headlines this off-season by acquiring Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors, thereby adding a veteran sharpshooter to their roster. Following their disappointment in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, former Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban and the front office actively sought to enhance their offensive versatility. Consequently, they signed Thompson to a three-year, $50 million contract.
During the Mavericks media day, Thompson discussed the adjustments he anticipates while playing alongside Luka Doncic. He noted, “From an Xs and Os standpoint, I have to adjust to playing off such good creators. In Golden State, it was a very motion-based offense. Just being able to play with Luka…his ability in the pick and roll is maybe the best I’ve ever seen.”
Klay Thompson is excited about the opportunities that come with playing alongside Doncic, stating, “That’s exciting…having a player like me who can draw the defense just by cutting through the lane or using an off-ball screen.” However, he acknowledged the need for an adjustment period: “I know I’ll obviously have to adjust to Luka. Luka’s the system, he’s an MVP frontrunner, and that’s a huge reason why I came here.”
After playing 13 years with the Warriors, during which he won four NBA championships and earned five All-Star selections, Thompson recognizes the learning curve ahead. In addition, he thinks that adapting to the new system will take him a few weeks. Moreover, he believes this preseason might be his most important one in many years.
Steve Kerr Reflects On Klay Thompson’s Departure
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr reflected on Thompson’s departure, acknowledging that Thompson had shown signs of wanting a change. “Yeah, there were signs…I wanted Klay to be a Warrior for life…by the end of the year, I think Klay knew, for his own sake, that he wanted to leave.”
Kerr expressed support for Thompson’s decision, believing it would be beneficial. “I’m happy for him. I think this will be a great move. He’s going to play for a great team with two high-level creators in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.”
