After spending over a decade with the Golden State Warriors and forming the iconic “Splash Brothers” duo with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson made a major shift this offseason. The sharpshooter, who helped the Warriors win four NBA championships, parted ways with the team as contract discussions between him and the Warriors reached an impasse.
This decision sent waves through the league, catching the attention of many other teams. Reportedly, Lakers star LeBron James personally reached out to Thompson, hoping to add the seasoned shooter to the Lakers’ lineup. According to an NBA insider, the Lakers even considered offering Thompson an exceptionally high contract.
Despite this intense pursuit, Thompson ultimately decided to take a different route. Thompson then joined the Dallas Mavericks after some convincing from Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving.
During an interview with ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Thompson opened up about why he chose Dallas over Los Angeles. For him, the Mavericks, who came close to winning the championship last season, offered a better opportunity to chase a fifth NBA title as he expressed his optimism about his new team.
“Honestly, it’s rejuvenated me and done something I needed bad just for my mental and my career. So, I really feel the love here, and I feel highly valued that I can do great things,” Thomson said.

“I think about the guys I won with all the time, and I talked to them before I made a decision. They were very supportive of it. They understand, and there’s no bad blood at all. With what we did, I’ll have a bond forever with those guys,” Thompson said.
This season, Thompson has been adjusting to his new role with the Mavericks, who currently hold a 5-5 record. Meanwhile, his former Warriors team is thriving, sitting at 8-2. Thompson himself is averaging 13.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.
