A blockbuster trade proposal has the San Antonio Spurs landing one of the NBA’s top big men players to form a dynamic duo with rookie Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs were the lucky winners of this year’s draft lottery and used the No. 1 selection on Wembanyama, widely regarded as the best draft prospect since LeBron James. In fact, some scouts believe that Wembanyama is better than James was when the latter entered the NBA at the age of 18 back in 2003-04.
San Antonio could look at a patient long-term rebuild with Wembanyama leading the way. Or they could go all-in right away and try to win now with Wembanyama on his rookie deal.
At NBA Analysis Network, James Piercey proposed a massive trade idea that has the Spurs landing Minnesota Timberwolves’ All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns in exchange for Devonte’ Graham, Reggie Bullock, Devin Vassell, Doug McDermot plus 2025, 2026 and 2027 first-round draft picks:
“Well, why has Towns arguably failed to meet expectations? It starts on the defensive end of the floor. Towns is a liability. He was a liability on the interior, so the Timberwolves acquired Rudy Gobert to cover for him. Now, he’s a liability on the perimeter.
Perhaps acquiring Gobert was never the way to minimize his defensive limitations. Towns may do better alongside an exceptionally long weak side shot blocker. In other words, a player like Wembanyama.
This duo makes a lot of sense. Wembanyama’s jumper is likely to be shaky at the beginning of his career. Pairing him with the best shooting big in the league makes as much sense as pairing Towns with a potentially elite help defender.”
The Timberwolves made significant progress in 2021-22 by finishing with 46 wins, the franchise’s best mark in four years. Believing they were ready to take the next step, Minny acquired Utah Jazz All-Star Rudy Gobert in a massive deal that saw the T-Wolves surrender four first-round picks.

The first year of the Towns-Gobert pairing was certainly a disappointment, as they regressed by four wins and once again got eliminated in round one. And if Minnesota were to trade the former, a team like the Spurs should definitely come calling.
After all, things worked out just fine for San Antonio last time they had a “Twin Towers” tandem like this in Tim Duncan and David Robinson.
