Jonathan Kuminga will start the 2024-25 NBA season with an expiring contract as the Golden State Warriors player and did not reach a new deal before the Monday deadline for rookie contract extensions. Despite this, Kuminga remains confident and has made bold claims for the new season.
During a recent appearance on ESPN’s NBA Today, Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed some key details regarding Kuminga’s failed deal. Additionally, Charania mentioned that Kuminga is confident that he can become a star player like Kawhi Leonard and Pascal Siakam.
“Jonathan Kuminga, I’m told, won’t be getting an extension done. He believes strongly in his play and believes he has a chance to be a star-level player. You look at Pascal Siakam, Kawhi Leonard, players who he could have the trajectory of. The Warriors do want to see how this plays out and they’re keeping a key eye on the fit between him and Steve Kerr.” Charania said.
According to Charania, Jonathan Kuminga’s potential success with the Warriors hinges on his ability to mesh with head coach Steve Kerr. In the previous NBA season, Kuminga showcased his skills in 74 games, boasting an average of 16.1 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Kuminga will have to enter free agency next season as he doesn’t have a contract extension. However, it’s not all bad news for him, as Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. hinted at his future with the franchise.
“Just because you don’t get an extension done doesn’t mean they’re not going to be here for a long time. We want those guys here.” Dunleavy Jr. said to ESPN.
