In his second season as the Boston Celtics head coach, Joe Mazzulla guided the team to the record 18th NBA championship last season. While Jaylen Brown was named the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, Jayson Tatum solidified his status as an NBA elite. Recently, the architect of the Celtics’ championship-winning run, Mazzulla, dropped a sensational statement while asked about their title defense.
After losing the 2022 NBA Finals 4-2 against the Golden State Warriors, the Boston Celtics replaced head coach Ime Udoka with Mazzulla in September 2022. The Celtics coach was born in 1988, making him three and a half years younger than the oldest active NBA player, LeBron James.
Recently, the Celtics’ coach appeared on an episode of the ‘Locked On Celtics‘ podcast. Host John Karalis asked the Celtics coach about getting targeted by other NBA teams in the upcoming season, and Mazzulla responded positively. He said, “I wish we started tomorrow … I hope it’s even 10 times harder than it was last year.”
Mazzulla added. “People are going to say the target’s on our back, but I hope it’s right in our forehead, in between our eyes. I hope I can see the red dot.” Part 1 of the Celtics coach’s interview is available on YouTube, while the other part will be released on Thursday evening.
What’s Next For The Boston Celtics?
The reigning NBA champions remained silent during the summer trading and will commence their title defense with almost a similar team to the last season. Oshae Brissett declined a player option to become a free agent in July, and Svi Mykhailiuk, who joined the Utah Jazz, are the two exceptions.
With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, and Kristaps Porzingis, among others, Boston will look to become the first team since the 2018 Golden State Warriors to win back-to-back titles.
