The Los Angeles Lakers lost 114-131 to the Memphis Grizzlies, dropping them to 1-4 in their past five games. JJ Redick had few rotational alternatives in this game since Anthony Davis was sidelined by injury, along with other unavailable players like Jarred Vanderbilt.
Despite the lack of depth, Redick benched starter D’Angelo Russell for most of the second half. Redick explained his decision, criticizing the Lakers guard for his lack of effort and competitiveness during the game.
Redick said, “Level of compete, attention to detail, some of the things we’ve talked with him about for a couple of weeks. At times, he’s been really good with that stuff and other times it’s just reverting back to certain habits. It wasn’t like a punishment, I just felt like for us to have a chance to win this game, that was the route we wanted to take.”
Ultimately, Redick deflected criticism by claiming it wasn’t a punishment. Still, it seemed like one for the guard, who was publically chastised by Darvin Ham the previous season. Whatever happens in the Lakers locker room is one thing, but Russell’s wildly inconsistent output seems to have been a recurring problem for the last two managers.
JJ Redick Reveals How LeBron James And The Team Has Bonded Well During Their Current Road Trip
The Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to end a five-game road trip. This spoiled a significant LeBron James milestone game. Redick discussed why the calls home are so tricky, how the team becomes closer while accruing travel miles, and what activities make rest days enjoyable.
Redick shared, “We watch film as a group when we are together. Our coaches do a great job breaking down individual film with each of the players in their player pods. I’m sure the guys had some night bonding moments in Toronto when we were there for four nights. I know I had some good moments on the golf course with a few of the guys so it’s been nice.”

Lakers coach then added, “There is a point in a road trip where like, for me, I just want to see my kids. But, it does not take away any of the excitement I have for any game or opportunity to compete. I think our guys feel that way as well.”
