JJ Redick, the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has provided clarification on his statement that his squad doesn’t have much ‘margin for error.’ Redick made it plain he was not talking to the roster when he made his remark during his postgame news conference following the Lakers’ 118-108 victory against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center.
Redick clarified, “What I was kinda getting at wasn’t our roster,” Redick said. “What I was getting at was the nature of how we play, the nature of how we play through our best players, and not having necessarily a Stephen Curry on our roster that can literally generate 10 to 12 threes a game. I was getting at the math more than anything.”

He added, “What I would say is the last two games, our three best players have played really well,” Redick continued. “And everyone else has starred in their roles and that’s what a great team is. (It) is guys starring in their roles. So, for (Jarred Vanderbilt), him starring in his role, Gabe (Vincent) starring in his role, Max Christie starring in his role, Jaxson Hayes starring, all those guys, (Dorian Finney-Smith). That separates us a little bit. That creates a margin for us to become a great team.”
With their only defeat coming at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers, the Lakers have now won five of their previous six games. Redick said in his news conference following the game against the Clippers that the Lakers didn’t have much leeway. Recently, there has been solid connectivity, and the Lakers have played well. Redick would like to think that remains the case when they play the Charlotte Hornets on Monday.

In the interview, Anthony Davis highlighted the “perfect construction” of the 2020 championship team. He claims that the Lakers’ size allowed him to play power forward, which he calls his “natural spot.” With a 25-18 record after their matchup with the Warriors, the Lakers are now ranked fifth in the Western Conference. They are just two games ahead of the Dubs, who are in 11th position.
