The Boston Celtics may have just screwed themselves big time.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Celtics have been in “regular contact” with the Nets regarding a trade but “appear no closer to acquiring Durant than others.” Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported the Celtics offered Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and an undisclosed draft pick for Durant. The Nets countered by asking for Brown, Marcus Smart, draft picks and another rotation player.
Brown saw the rumors and wasn’t pleased about it.
The Celtics’ willingness to include Brown in trade talks likely makes them the favorites to land Durant. However, if this trade doesn’t go through, the team has now alienated Brown who now knows this team is trying to part ways with him.
Brown, who won’t turn 26 until October, has scored 20 points three seasons in a row but has never had the opportunity to be an offensive leader.
Whatever scars there may be, hearing the Celtics offered him to Brooklyn is unlikely to soothe them. Regardless of whether the Celtics manage to sign Durant, don’t be shocked if Brown attempts to find a new home for himself before the start of the upcoming season.
