What do you do when you are a young, rich NBA player who is confined in a “bubble” for several months? The answer, according to J.R. Smith, is smoke weed… A lot of weed.
Appearing on the “All The Smoke” podcast with fellow marijuana enthusiasts and former NBA players Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes, Smith spoke on how many of his peers were blazing up back in the NBA Bubble in 2020 , where the end of the regular season and entirety of playoffs took place in Orlando, Florida.
When asked by Barnes if tree was in the air at the bubble, Smith responded with “We was blowing it down in there. That was the only way you can function in that joint.” (No pun intended)
Prior to play in the bubble, the NBA announced that they would forgo the testing of recreational drugs, which must have been music to the ears for many players. With many states and jurisdictions around the world legalizing the use of both medicinal and recreational cannabis use, the NBA made the right decision here, as we can all agree that weed is not exactly a Performance Enhancing Drug.
J.R. Smith ended up getting his 2nd championship ring with the Lakers that season before retiring.
