On a recent episode of the Gils Arena Show, former NBA stars Gilbert Arenas, Brandon Jennings, and Kenyon Martin engaged in a lively debate about how to measure dominance in 1v1 matchups. The conversation heated up when Arenas argued that points alone are the key to determining who the dominant player was.
“I can’t see these points. You could have zero points and got 20 assists, and to me, I stopped the f**k out. You didn’t score,” said Gilbert Arenas.
However, Jennings strongly disagreed with Arenas’ perspective. He argued that assists should count just as much as scoring, if not more, when determining a player’s influence on the game.
“No, you didn’t. 20 assists is 40 points. That’s dominating the game!” Jennings said.
Kenyon Martin agreed with both viewpoints. He acknowledged that scoring and creating opportunities for teammates are both valuable forms of dominance on the court.
The conversation didn’t stop there. NBA legend Isiah Thomas later jumped into the discussion through social media. In a post on X, Thomas supported Jennings’ and Martin’s views on the importance of team play while expressing his disagreement with Arenas’ take.

“Young players listening to @GilsArenaShow Mr. Jennings and Mr. Martin (Big Respect) are talking about winning TEAM basketball. Playing only for yourself will get you cut from most teams, and yes, Mr. Arenas (Respect), that assist counts on your head and your teammates,” Thomas wrote.
Gilbert Arenas Defends Russell Westbrook Amid Criticism
On his latest podcast, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas defended Russell Westbrook. Despite Westbrook’s remarkable achievements, particularly his record-breaking triple-doubles, he continues to face heavy criticism from analysts and fans alike.
Michael Jordan’s admirer didn’t hold back in expressing his frustration with how Westbrook’s accomplishments are sometimes downplayed.
“It was like they were trying to discredit his triple-double. These same people are voting; they got your legacy in their hands. So if you don’t kiss their a**** they sit there and f*** with your legacy,” Arenas said.
After spending many years in the league, Arenas is no stranger to such criticism. With Arenas now facing some criticism of his own, particularly after Isiah Thomas’ recent bold take on him, it remains to be seen how Arenas will respond.
