Isaiah Thomas played for the Boston Celtics from the 2014-15 season through the end of the 2016-17 campaign. Although Thomas didn’t win an NBA title during his time in Boston, fans still fondly remember him for his remarkable performances.
In a recent appearance on the Knuckleheads podcast with former NBA players Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, Thomas opened up about the unique experience of playing for the franchise.
“You go to a Boston game; I mean, you go to a game away; it’s all green in there. The feeling of playing for the Celtics is amazing. And then the love you get, the love that I get to this day, you would think I won a championship there; you would think I had a 10-year career there, like you would think my jersey is retired in them stands,” Thomas said.
The Phoenix Suns guard then went on to describe the unwavering support he continues to receive from Celtics fans.
“The love that they give me and the love that I got there from day one, like you said, it’s just different,” he added.
Isaiah Thomas Reflects on Painful Departure from the Celtics
In 2015, the Boston Celtics made a pivotal trade with the Phoenix Suns to acquire Isaiah Thomas. However, Thomas’s tenure with the Celtics didn’t end on a high note. In 2017, the Celtics traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a deal that brought Kyrie Irving to Boston.

On the Knuckleheads podcast, Thomas, who recently slammed Anthony Edwards, described the emotional and physical challenges he faced following the trade.
“What hurt me the most was that nothing was explained to me. If you tell me, ‘This could worsen; this is what you have,’ then it’s my decision to take the risk. But none of that was told to me,” Thomas said.
“It took me three years to get back to being myself and understand what was happening. But it was a tough situation. It was a learning experience for me. I have a true love for Boston and everyone in that organization, but it definitely was not the right way to handle things,” he added.
During his career with the Celtics, Thomas averaged 24.7 points, 6.0 assists, and 2.7 rebounds over 179 games.
