The Philadelphia 76ers’ decision to start Joel Embiid again came at an unnecessary expense.
The 76ers will pay a $100,000 fine to the NBA for breaking injury reporting regulations concerning the reigning league MVP’s Tuesday game versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The NBA claims that the franchise listed center Joel Embiid’s condition incorrectly for Tuesday’s game versus the Thunders. Embiid was classified by the Sixers as out until just before tipoff. But in the 109-105 victory over Philadelphia, he scored 24 points in 29 minutes of action.
According to an NBA statement made public on Friday, “Embiid was listed as ‘Out’ in Philadelphia’s initial injury report and subsequently played in the game, The fine takes into account the 76ers’ prior history of fines for violating injury reporting rules.”
Whether it’s the second game of a back-to-back, each club is required by league regulations to report the status of any player who may be affected by injury by 5 p.m. local time on the day before a game. The injury report is then updated regularly.
Joel Embiid’s Injury Report Has Already Resulted in Fines for the Philadelphia 76ers in the Past
The league said that consideration was given to Philadelphia’s past of paying penalties for breaking injury reporting regulations. Similar to this week, Joel Embiid was recuperating from a knee ailment when he returned to the floor in a similar fashion for Game 3 of the second-round playoff matchup against the Miami Heat two years prior, for which Philadelphia was fined $50,000.

Embiid’s availability was modified to “questionable” just before the game on Tuesday. The move sparked rumors that he will return to the floor, and more information from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN confirmed the big man’s homecoming. However, it appears that the 76ers neglected to notify the NBA of this information.
It seems improbable that Embiid will play in both the Philadelphia Eagles’ final road games on Saturday in Memphis and Sunday in San Antonio. As he continues to heal, the club is anticipated to give him part of that back-to-back off.
