Since Victor Wembanyama burst onto the scene following his 2023 NBA Draft, the French wonderkid has been relentless in pursuit of perfection. While the San Antonio Spurs’ season was far from perfect, Wemby progressed throughout the season exponentially. The scariest part of the Rookie Of The Year award recipient is that he is yet to reach his full potential, which could make him the best player ever to grace the basketball court. At least that’s what Lonzo Ball believes.
During a recent episode of the “What An Experience Show” podcast, the Bulls guard heaped praise on Wembanyama. According to him, “[Victor Wembanyama] might be the best defensive player we’ve ever seen… He has a chance to be the best player ever, potentially. I’ll say that right now.”
In his rookie year, Wemby racked up 21.4 points per game, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 71 outings for the Spurs. Not only that, he became the first player to be on the All-Defensive first team as a rookie.
Lonzo, however, could not take a first-hand look at the 7’4″ center as he was ruled out from playing for the Bulls due to his injury. Hopefully, next season will give Lonzo a better chance to look at Wemby’s talents when they face off on the court.
Lonzo was not the only one. Wembanyama has garnered undisputed praise from the NBA critics, and one of them has even listed him alongside the GOATs of the game.

Recently, Gilbert Arenas stirred the pot with his generational talent claims which shunned Stephen Curry from the list. During a recent episode of Patrick Beverley’s “Pat Bev Pod”, Agent Zero was asked about the matter once again, but this time was only asked to name a team of generational talents.

The former Magic guard, without hesitating, put forth a starting line-up consisting of Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and LeBron James. He was even added to the bench, where, alongside Kevin Durant, was the Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama.
Arenas further explained that to fit his generational criteria, one must do something unprecedented, and Victor Wembanyama, with his frame, fits the bill.
This was not the first time Gilbert Arenas praised the defensive maestro. Recently, Arenas predicted that Wemby would be the first-ever player to earn $1 billion through playing contracts.
Given the state of San Antonio, they might have to hold that idea off for a while as their priority is to give Wemby a competitive team to lead. Thanks to the two first-round draft picks (4 and 8) the franchise currently holds, they’ll be able to bring some solid quality to the team from the rookie pool or via trades.
Free agency is another avenue for adding some much-needed quality to the Western Conference team. Overall, the Spurs are having a big summer, which will go a long way toward helping Wembanyama fulfill the sky-high expectations surrounding him.
