After the Lakers got dumped out of the post-season, D’Angelo Russell made a definitive comment on his future. He indicated that going into the summer, he could become a free agent or use this as leverage to extract a better contract. However, none of that happened as Russell decided to opt in for his $18 million player option.
The free agency starts on Sunday and before that, a lot of big names are already on the market. D’Angelo Russell revealed how the change in coaching with JJ Redick, helped him in his decision-making. “I love what JJ is about, and I really see myself thriving under his guidance to help win at a high level,” Russell told Dave McMenamin.
D’Angelo Russell’s comments about the new hire only indicate how the team has bought into Redick’s philosophy.
Russell scored his season-high 44 points against the Bucks in March and had 30 20+ games throughout the regular season. This contributed to his 18-point average last season from 41% field shooting. But how will D’Angelo Russell fare in the new Lakers system, or how does his contract choice help the Lakers?
How Does D’Angelo Russell’s Opting-In Help Lakers?
As of now, Russell can be viewed as the point guard for the franchise. But things could change if the Lakers decide to trade him.
Trae Young’s name has been around the block for months, and with Russell in his final year, he has become an easy trade option.

Even if the Lakers stick with Russell, there’s a lot JJ Redick can get from the former NBA All-Star. After his appointment, JJ Redick spoke about his intentions to see the Lakers as a more offensive unit. He wants more shots, and more spacing and indicated that Anthony Davis would be the hub of it.
D’Angelo Russell is a capable shooter and passer of the ball, which can make him effective in Redick’s backcourt. With Austin Reaves or rookie Dalton Knecht, he could form a formidable shooting duo, which will certainly help the Lakers improve their 29th rank in 3-point shooting. As things stand, D’Angelo Russell is a Laker, and that’s only good news for the franchise.
