The Los Angeles Lakers secured a 123-103 win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday night, but a concerning injury to Anthony Davis overshadowed the victory. The nine-time All-Star left the game after an inadvertent poke to the eye while blocking a dunk attempt by Raptors’ Jakob Poeltl. Davis was ruled out for the rest of the night, but the big question remains: how long will he be sidelined?
The injury occurred with 5:16 left in the third quarter when Davis blocked Poeltl’s dunk. However, Poeltl’s off-hand struck Davis in the face. Davis fell to the floor in pain, staying down for a minute before walking to the locker room. At the time, the Lakers trailed by three points, but they finished the game on a 53-30 run in Davis’ absence.
Davis experienced swelling and had difficulty keeping his left eye open after the contact. Sources reported that he will see an ophthalmologist as a precautionary measure. This isn’t Davis’ first eye injury—he suffered a corneal abrasion to the same eye last March but managed to return just two days later. The team is optimistic, though, with no immediate updates on how long he will be out.
LeBron James Takes Charge In The Absence Of Anthony Davis
With Davis out, LeBron James stepped up, recording his 115th career triple-double. He finished with 19 points, 16 assists, and 10 rebounds, leading the Lakers to victory. “AD is a big-time rebounder, so I had to pick up some of the slack,” James said. Meanwhile, Jaxson Hayes made a big impact, adding 12 points and six rebounds in Davis’ absence.
Davis had been performing at an MVP-caliber level, leading the league in scoring at 32.4 points per game before the injury. His contributions had already sparked early MVP discussions. With Davis now sidelined, the Lakers are hopeful that his absence will be brief and that their star forward will be back soon.
The Lakers next face the Memphis Grizzlies at home on Wednesday night, but it remains unclear whether Davis will be available. While his injury is concerning, the team is taking a cautious approach to ensure his long-term health, especially given his significant role in the Lakers’ early success this season.
