Guarding Luka Doncic, Anthony Edwards started Game 5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ series against the Dallas Mavericks. ANT formerly pursued Kyrie Irving, but Timberwolves coach Chris Finch changed the defense in Game 4. It was hoped that Edwards would have enough left in the tank to keep the Wolves from faltering again late in the game.
Doncic immediately informed the Timberwolves that the plan was flawed even though Dallas lost Game four 105-100. The Slovenian quickly targeted one of the NBA’s top defenders from the first tip. A shot from Doncic’s explosive start had Edwards nodding his head, half in amazement, half in gratitude.
The camera caught the priceless reaction of Anthony Edwards telling Wolves’ Bench about the incident: “I went under [the screen] and he stepped back right where that kid is wearing my jersey at.”
A little more than ten minutes remained in the first quarter when the play took place. Luka Doncic carefully walked the ball to the Mavericks’ side of the floor following Anthony Edwards’ dunk. A few feet from the halfcourt line, Daniel Gafford met him for a screen, bringing Rudy Gobert, the center for Wolves, along with him.
Rather than battling the screen for space, Edwards slid beneath it, forcing Gobert to remain in front of Slovenian before confronting Gafford, who was rolling toward the edge. The All-NBA guard needed the tiny opening to execute his signature move, which involved moving to the left to shoot a triple.

Even though Edwards didn’t shoot well in Game 7 against the previous champions, his influence was felt throughout the contest. After defeating the heavily favored Nuggets, the parallels to Michael Jordan grew louder.

Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic informed Edwards that he still has much to learn about the postseason. Late in games, Doncic, in particular, taught the explosive guard a lesson in poise and perseverance. Because their superstars possessed these qualities in more significant quantities than their Timberwolves counterparts, the Mavericks will advance to the NBA Finals in 2024.
In the first four games of the series, Minnesota led going into the fourth quarter. Dallas may had started the series 0–2 before it moved to Texas. However, the Mavericks quickly took control of the series thanks to crucial late runs led by Doncic and a tenacious defense that wouldn’t let up. Dallas will now face the Celtics on June 7 in the 2024 NBA Finals.
