Paul George has one year remaining on the four-year extension he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in December 2020, which is worth up to $190 million. As trade speculation swirls, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggests that the situation could escalate quickly.
There has been growing speculation that George might exercise his player option and request a trade. On Monday, Windhorst stirred controversy by saying that a trade could happen this weekend.
“He could opt-in and get traded by this weekend. That is something that is going to come to a head in the next day or two if he wants to go with that option, because obviously you’d have to negotiate a trade. Then, the team wouldn’t necessarily need salary cap space. We’re going to see some action in that, probably coming up very quickly after the draft,” Windhorst said.
George is coming off his ninth All-Star campaign after playing more than 74 games. He averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 3.3 three-pointers per game last season.
Bill Simmons Advises Paul George to Stay with the Clippers Amid Trade Speculation
With the Los Angeles Clippers firm on their offer to Paul George, it seems likely that the veteran forward will be with a new team next season. Speculation has arisen several teams’ interest in him, including the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers.
However, sports analyst Bill Simmons has a different perspective, advising George to stay with the Clippers rather than move to Philadelphia.

“If I’m Paul George, I just stay in LA, and make a ton of money. I’m from LA, you know. I wouldn’t say that there is a sh*t load of pressure on the Clippers players out here, right? Nice weather every day and I have an awesome house. Or I could move to Philadelphia, with one of the psychotic fanbases that exists, where the moment anything goes wrong, it’s my f**king fault,” Simmons said.
Since joining the Clippers, George has helped the team reach the playoffs in four out of five seasons. However, the team has not advanced beyond the Western Conference finals during his tenure.
