Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s partnership has been the centerpiece of the Dallas Mavericks game plan. With the veteran experience of Kyrie Irving, Doncic looks even more lethal, and, as a result, the Mavs have propelled themselves to the Western Conference semifinals.
With everyone applauding the dynamic duo of the Dallas franchise, Trae Young also joined in to voice his appreciation. On his From The Point podcast, the Hawks guard dived deeper into the connection between Doncic and Irving. “I already know why it works. It’s because he allows Luka to be Luka. He’s older now, he just wants to win. He doesn’t want all the extra stuff that people probably think he wants,” said Young. “I just think he is letting Luka be himself, but also taking over when he needs to. He doesn’t step in Luka’s lane”, Trae further added. (After 21:00)
While Kyrie Irving is now the shining jewel of the Mavs crown, the fans were not too delighted when the guard was added to the Mavs roster last year due to his “locker room cancer” image. When that was pointed out again after his game 6 performance, Trae Young came to the defense of the 32-year-old guard.

Trae Young Defends Kyrie Irving From “Locker Room Cancer” Allegations
After Kyrie Irving’s second-half performance against the Clippers in game 6, his bad reputation was again brought out into the light. In a press conference, Mavericks HC Jason Kidd defended Irving, saying, “We don’t see that perception of what’s been written in the past. He knows how to play the game. He’s worldly, which is a beautiful thing. He can talk about other things and sometimes that scares people.”
The video of Kidd’s statement soon reached all corners of social media, and it did not evade the attention of Trae Young. The 3-time All-Star extended his support by commenting on the video on X (formerly known as Twitter) “People who KNOW Ky gets this.”

Irving’s reputation was built that way during his Boston Celtics days. But it became worse in the Brooklyn Nets, where his off-court antics took a toll on his NBA career. However, the 8-time All-Star overcame the hardships and established himself as the key member of the Dallas squad. He is fully locked in for Tuesday’s encounter against OKC Thunder.
