The 2024 NBA Draft class has been a hot topic, but not for the usual reasons. Unlike previous years, this class didn’t come with the same level of star power that fans have grown accustomed to. Yet, despite the absence of big names, Zaccharie Risacher was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. While some may be quick to dismiss this year’s rookies, Hawks star Trae Young isn’t ready to underestimate their potential just yet.
During his appearance on the “Podcast P with Paul George,” Young expressed his thoughts on the incoming draft class. He acknowledged that while some might be skeptical, there could still be surprises in store.
“No disrespect to the guys that got drafted… some guys might surprise us, but a lot of us look at them as role players coming in anyways,” Young said.
“A lot of these guys could be just role players, so all the GMs are really just trying to figure out who is going to be the best role player for their team. As good as Alex Sarr is, I don’t think he’s going to be their franchise player going forward,” Young added.
Trae Young Talks About the “Next Stephen Curry” Label
People have often compared Trae Young to Stephen Curry since college and throughout his NBA career. On Paul George’s podcast, Young shared his thoughts on these comparisons, sharing how he never fully embraced the idea of being the “Next Stephen Curry.”
“That (pressure) really all started in college. We played in the Phil Knight tournament had a really good showing and then we were on ESPN every day. I swear that’s all they were pushing – ‘The next Steph Curry’. I never paid too much attention to it, I never was like ‘Yeah, I’m about to be the next Steph’,” Young said.
