It’s only fitting for the NBA’s all-time winningest coach to be rewarded with the richest contract among all coaches in league history.
Per a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the San Antonio Spurs have given head coach Gregg Popovich a lucrative five-year contract extension worth over $80 million.
The Spurs confirmed the report in a statement.
Last month, the Detroit Pistons handed Monty Williams (a former coaching intern with the Spurs in their third championship-winning season back in 2005) a six-year deal worth $78.5 million. For just over a month, that stood as the richest contract ever for an NBA head coach.
Popovich is the all-time NBA leader in wins for a head coach with 1,366. He has led the Spurs to five NBA Championships over his Hall of Fame career (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014), plus a trip to the 2013 NBA Finals.

The three-time NBA Coach of the Year also led the United States to a gold medal in men’s basketball at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
The Spurs are coming off a fourth straight losing and non-playoff season after qualifying every year from 1998 to 2019. For the first time in some years, however, the buzz around the team is ultra-high following the arrival of first overall pick Victor Wembanyama.
With Popovich signed long-term, it all but assures that he’ll have the honors of coaching Wembanyama during his rise to stardom.
