In the 2001 NBA draft, the Washington Wizards selected Kwame Brown as the first overall pick, with legendary player Michael Jordan serving as the team’s president at the time. Despite the hype after the draft, his time with the team did not meet expectations.
During a recent guest appearance on the Underground Lounge podcast, former NBA player Gilbert Arenas shared a captivating story involving Brown. Arenas vividly recalled a particular incident when he and his teammates were enjoying a party, and to everyone’s surprise, Jordan referred to Brown as a “hoe.”
“We in Chicago. His (Brown’s) hero is Jordan, his nemesis is Jordan, but his real nemesis is (Charles) Oakley, right? I remember we sitting at the bar and Jordan (was) there…Kwame’s like, ‘Yeah, I’mma f*** him up, I’mma whoop his a** now. Yeah… So, Jordan come, ‘Hey h*e. What your a** over here doing h*e?’ And Kwame didn’t say nothing.” Arenas said
During the party, Arenas recounted an incident in which Brown instructed the bartender to serve Jordan five liquor shots. While Jordan was consuming the shots, he taunted Brown by repeatedly referring to him as a “hoe.”
Arenas Praises Jordan’s Reaction To Brown Following Liquor Shots
Brown and Jordan were teammates on the court from 2001 to 2003, but their relationship was complicated. The Bulls legend, who recently purchased a $70 million private jet, humiliated Brown several times. Brown also had conflicts with Arenas, other teammates, and his coach, Eddie Jordan. Further in the interview, Arenas praised Jordan for his response to Brown after taking liquor shots.
“And I can say Jordan’s mother******* brilliant mother******* mind. He seen it, and he was like, ‘Oh, you trying to get some courage, huh?’ Hey, no dead like, he peeped in like, ‘Oh, you trying to get some courage, huh? Oakley downstairs.’ That’s all MJ said…Whatever that liquor was going to do god damn it the name Oakley reversed that s***.” Arenas said.

Brown was very confident in his abilities after being selected by the Wizards. However, fans were disappointed when he struggled to perform well in his rookie season. Brown’s debut season statistics included an average of 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. This led to heavy criticism and caused many analysts to label him one of the biggest busts in the NBA’s history.
