Less than a month after landing All-Star guard Damian Lillard to bolster their championship hopes, the Milwaukee Bucks made another potential franchise-altering move on Monday evening.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks have reached an agreement on a three-year extension worth $186 million. The two-time league MVP was previously eligible to become a free agent in 2025.
NBA fans had plenty of reactions to the blockbuster news that came just one day before opening night for the 2023-24 season.

Giannis’ name previously surfaced in trade rumors following an interview with Tania Ganguli of the New York Times that was published in August. In the piece, Antetokounmpo indicated that he would only sign an extension with Milwaukee if he felt like they were truly committed to building a championship team around him.
His message was obviously received loud and clear from the Bucks’ front office and ownership. And with that, the Bucks can now focus on winning their second championship in four years following back-to-back disappointing and early postseason exits.
Just over two years ago, Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton led the Bucks to the franchise’s first NBA championship since 1971, when they defeated the Devin Booker and Chris Paul-led Phoenix Suns in six games.
With Antetokounmpo, Middleton and now Lillard in the fold, the Bucks are well-positioned to add more championship hardware to the organization’s trophy room.
