The sports card and memorabilia business has seen a huge boom over recent years, with seemingly every month a new record being set. This month was no different as Sotheby’s Auction announced that a game worn Michael Jordan jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals recently sold for over $10 million.
The huge price tag just narrowly beat out Diego Maradona’s jersey from the 1986 World Cup, which sold for $9.28 million back in May. The Jordan jersey now holds the record for most valuable game-worn memorabilia ever sold as well as the most expensive Michael Jordan item ever sold at auction.
MJ wore this jersey in Game one of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. The Bulls would actually go on to lose that game in overtime, but eventually would close out the series in six games for their sixth Championship of the 90’s. Jordan was named the Finals MVP for all six titles he won.
With the prices of sports memorabilia skyrocketing, it is only a matter of time until this record is broken.
